Nestled along the Brooklyn Waterfront, overlooking the East River and Manhattan Skyline, the Kent Avenue penthouse apartment is one of its kind; New York’s industrial vibe meets soft minimalism and tactile materials in this urban retreat above the vibrating city. The open plan solution is preserved and layered with thoughtful elements to define different zones, and on the sunken terrace one can take a dip in the plunge pool or simply relax and enjoy the exquisite view.

Spanning approx. 350 square meters, the Kent Avenue penthouse residence occupies the entire top floor of a grand building along the East River. The unique home is divided into two distinct living spaces – one designed for the privacy of the family, and the other a fully equipped guest house.

Framed by the stunning Manhattan skyline, the cozy atmosphere takes on a breathtaking new dimension.

A skylight in the hallway floods the narrow space with natural light, creating an open and airy atmosphere.

The open-plan layout of both apartments is thoughtfully layered with elements that subtly define various zones, maintaining a sense of fluidity while offering spaces for relaxation and privacy. Large floor-to-ceiling windows enhance the seamless flow between indoors and out, connecting the home to the breathtaking views of the river and Manhattan skyline as well as the lush greenery on the expansive terrace that envelopes the residence.

With its blend of modern design and tactile materials, the Kent Avenue penthouse residence embodies contemporary elegance and tranquility, delivering a space that feels both intimate and spacious.

Our bodies are at home in nature, and we reach a blissful homeostasis in the presence of natural elements. While we might not realistically exchange the metropolis for the forest, bringing nature into the built environment has a similar, calming effect.

A serene interior offers balance to the vibrant views outside, while soft and plush textiles create a warm and tactile home environment. The design blends organic shapes with clean lines, crafting a space that feels both soothing and stimulating.

The bespoke kitchen crafted by Vipp features a sleek black exterior with a natural oak core, blending style and functionality. The steel tabletop adds a refined, modern touch, while the folding fronts seamlessly tuck away, optimizing space and offering versatile design options within a single kitchen.
Situated between the kitchen-dining area and the living room, a grand bookcase features a perforated steel back that permits natural light to flow through the space. The design not only preserves the connection between the areas but also delineates their distinct functions. Additionally, the bookcase serves as a showcase for the family’s treasured personal items.

An in-built fireplace framed by elegant Carrara marble adds a touch of luxury. Discreet hidden doors open to reveal a private TV lounge, maintaining a clean and tranquil aesthetic.

Transitioning from the kitchen area, a door opens to reveal the adult suite, which encompasses an office, bedroom, walk-in closet, and bathroom. The walkway is adorned with floor-to ceiling windows that frame serene views of the lush greenery on the terrace. Translucent curtains gracefully drape from end to end, softening the space’s sleek materials.

The wooden bedframe, with its headboard extending all the way to the ceiling, creates an intimate alcove within the airy, open space. Thoughtfully crafted, it serves a dual purpose as a closet on the reverse side, seamlessly merging function with style.
The natural wood draws inspiration from the outdoors, blurring the boundaries between the interior and the surrounding greenery. This connection to nature brings warmth and tranquility, softening the modern design while fostering a deep sense of well-being and relaxation – transforming the room into a serene retreat.

The bathroom is crafted entirely from large grey stone slabs, with elegant silver fixtures that enhance the cool, modern aesthetic. In contrast to the warm wooden tones of the bedroom, the sharp lines of the stone create a bold, minimalist look. Soft curtains, consistent with the rest of the house, introduce a tactile element, casting beautiful shadows from the surrounding trees and greenery. Cleverly hidden storage adds to the clean, streamlined design.

The guest unit offers a cozy yet spacious layout, featuring a well-appointed kitchen, a living room, a tranquil bedroom, a small office nook, a bathroom, and a toilet. Each room is designed with the same elegant style as the main apartment, ensuring a cohesive flow that feels effortlessly luxurious. Every detail, from the soft color palette to the clean lines, contributes to a sense of calm and sophistication.
Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light, blurring the boundary between the indoors and the breathtaking surroundings. Beyond the windows, a large wooden deck beckons, offering breathtaking views of the Manhattan cityscape.

It’s a serene retreat, where urban life meets tranquil living, with every detail carefully curated for a sense of unity and calm – a perfect blend of urban energy and quiet retreat.

The guest bedroom features a minimalist bedframe that mirrors the style of the main apartment. A large window invites natural light, while a private deck enhances seclusion. Tucked behind the wall, a small desk offers a functional workspace, with a bathroom conveniently located down the hall.

A dreamy fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian design elements invites tranquility and harmony, while the preservation of the inside original steel structure honor the building’s rich heritage, allowing it to form a robust framework for an exquisitely delicate home where heritage and modernity gracefully intertwine.

The interior represents a simplistic fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian design elements that invites tranquility and harmony into the mundane. This way, the space is designed to balance the vibrant views outside, creating a quiet canvas that lets the landscape take center stage. Here, the past and present co-exist in harmony, offering a tranquil retreat amid the dynamic energy of the city.

With a thoughtful approach to the apartment’s interior, it feels integrated with its surroundings – celebrating both the historical significance and contemporary relevance.

A striking double-height combined kitchen and living room serves as the heart of the home.

A custom-designed kitchen, crafted from oak wood and stone, is elegantly framed by the existing steel structure, blending heritage and modernity. The tactile quality of the chosen materials not only enhances the sense of touch but also adds a rich, organic texture that elevates the entire space.
This thoughtful selection of materials contributes to the kitchen’s warmth and sophistication, making it a centerpiece of both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The wood brings a natural warmth, while the stone adds a timeless durability, together creating a balance that resonates throughout the home.

The existing staircase has been refined to harmonize better with its surroundings. While featuring a sleek surface in the same color as the wall behind it, it still serves as a striking sculptural element within the space.
Drawing inspiration from the maritime backdrop in a minimalist interpretation, the staircase is equipped with steel stringers and railings, enhancing its modern aesthetic while maintaining functionality and elegance. In total, a transformation that exemplifies a seamless union of form and function, where every detail contributes to a cohesive and captivating architectural narrative.

Incorporating a traditional Shoji screen in the bathroom introduces a captivating interplay of light, shadow, and texture. The delicate washi paper, meticulously crafted for its translucency and durability, gently diffuses natural light, bathing the space in a soft, warm glow. This subtle diffusion creates a serene and inviting ambiance, perfect for a bathroom setting where relaxation is key.

The natural wooden frame adds a layer of organic beauty that complements both modern and traditional interiors, but beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Shoji screen also serves practical purposes. Its ability to maintain privacy while allowing the room to feel open and airy makes it an ideal choice for intimate spaces like bathrooms. The gentle separation provided by the screen fosters a sense of calm and privacy without the need for heavy or opaque barriers.
This ancient Japanese technique not only enhances the bathroom’s visual harmony with its simple elegance but also fosters a sense of peace and mindfulness.

Carefully selected sculptures and furniture with organic forms contrast the straight lines of their surroundings to create a stimulating space.

Holmens Canal where the home is located is a picturesque and historically rich area that stretches along the waterfront. It’s a hub where past and present merge seamlessly. Today, historic structures have been repurposed, embodying the city’s blend of preservation and innovation. The canal itself, flanked by charming old warehouses and sleek modern developments, offers a tranquil yet vibrant setting. Whether you’re strolling along the canal’s edge or exploring the fascinating heritage of the motor torpedo boat halls, Holmens Canal captures the essence of Copenhagen’s maritime legacy and contemporary spirit.

The Repulse Bay Residence is envisioned as a living gallery that continuously evolve and adapt to a variety of everyday needs. This thoughtful design creates a tranquil environment, where each room offers a new perspective on the surrounding nature, encouraging exploration akin to a gallery visit.

Throughout the home, views and artworks are thoughtfully highlighted and framed by the architecture, inviting residents to engage with each feature in a unique and intimate manner. This dynamic approach transforms the home into a living, breathing work of art, where discovery and inspiration await around every corner.

The Repulse Bay area, located in the southern part of Hong Kong Island, is famed not only for its immaculate sandy beach but also for the lush, verdant forests that create a stunning backdrop.

Nestled along Hong Kong’s southern coastline, Repulse Bay Residence harmoniously blends natural inspiration with sophisticated design. Drawing from the surrounding mountains, sea, and verdant vegetation, the interior palette embraces subtle, earthy hues that seamlessly integrate with the untouched beauty just beyond its windows. This fusion of colors and materials forms a serene backdrop, mirroring the tranquil landscape that surrounds it.

Inspired by the layout of modern galleries, the residence is structured around freestanding walls that not only divide but also showcase each area like curated pieces of art in a museum – setting the stage for a functional yet inviting home, where every corner invite exploration and appreciation.

Throughout the residence, ever- changing views unfolds, connecting spaces and levels with inbuilt architectural elements that enhance both aesthetics and functionality.
Embracing simplicity, the interior features a palette of natural materials that evolve in soft gradients, enriching each room with texture and character. This approach creates a harmonious atmosphere, where every detail contributes to a sense of tranquility and comfort.

We’ve worked with a contrasting palette of natural materials that evolves throughout the space, integrating in soft gradients. This approach ensures that each room is unique and rich with textures, creating an immersive environment.

With a simple aim of creating an elegant base for a functional and cozy home, variations of built-in storage make it possible to keep the space tidy and inviting.

The space is connected throughout, with layers made up by inbuilt features and shifting levels. Moreover, division between the different functions within the home is created through a series of freestanding walls, bringing a sense of functional gallery showcase to the atmosphere of the home.

Inspired by the surrounding nature, we have worked with subtle, earthy tones and materials that evoke the natural world. Soft hues blend throughout the space, while natural materials such as stone, wood, and dolomite plaster are used extensively, creating a tactile and organic ambiance. These choices not only bring the serenity of the outdoors inside but also ensure that the design remains timeless and connected to its environment. The result is a living space that feels both elegant and grounded, offering a seamless transition between the interior and the breathtaking natural scenery just beyond the windows.

The only truly separate space is the bedroom, yet even here, the design ensures it doesn’t feel isolated. Instead, the bedroom integrates seamlessly into the overall layout, maintaining a sense of openness.

Overall, the home not only embodies aesthetic sophistication but also offers a retreat where time seems to slow down, allowing for contemplation and a profound connection with nature. It serves as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of modern design and the natural environment, providing residents with a unique opportunity to unwind and rejuvenate in a setting of unparalleled beauty and tranquility.

Inspired by the surrounding nature, we have chosen subtle, earthy tones reminiscent of the nearby mountains, sea, and forest to seamlessly connect the interior with the unspoiled nature just outside the windows.

With the design of the bathroom, we worked to showcase a blend of traditional Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics. With hinoki wood  lending its subtle fragrance and smooth texture to create a calming atmosphere, the space now embodies the natural elegance and simplicity of both cultures. Clean lines and minimalist fixtures enhance the tranquil ambiance, while natural light floods the room, highlighting the beauty of the wood grain. The result is a bathroom that feels both luxurious and soothing, a perfect sanctuary within the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

As you step into the home, you will immediately sense the calming effect it exudes. Every design choice and architectural feature is intended to enhance the sensation of arrival at your tranquil retreat – meticulously designed to seamlessly integrate with the raw beauty of its surroundings. It’s a place where the stresses of daily life melt away, replaced by a profound sense of peace of mind.

With this ground-up project, we have worked to explore the notion of a traditional Danish summerhouse set in wild nature. An approach that is reflected in the overall shapes of the structures and the choice of wood as the primary material inside-out.
Two carefully crafted axes effortlessly connect different functions within the house, ensuring a harmonious flow from one space to the next. The house itself is thoughtfully positioned primarily on the previous house plot to minimize the impact on the surrounding landscape as well as to work with the sloping surroundings, using various levels to create a sense of comfort within, while maximizing the stunning views of the landscape.

The barn-structure profile contrast sharply with the soft hills and undulated landscape surrounding the house, while the cedar cladding gives the house a natural skin that, over time, will patinate to a beautiful silvery color, that blends in with the color of the site – resulting in an architecture that both blends in and stands out at the same time.

The house itself seems to grow naturally from the landscape, adorned with a sedum roof and cedar cladding aging with grace, further enhancing its connection to the environment. The strict, linear architecture creates striking silhouettes, offering a visual juxtaposition that is both striking and soothing. Moreover, a private atrium beckons you to unwind and reconnect with nature. This secluded oasis allows you to enjoy the outdoors in privacy, creating a tranquil space that is truly your own.

The architecture is designed to draw the eye and hold your attention – leading you on a journey of discovery throughout the entire property. Long views extend through the house, welcoming you with a glimpse of the breathtaking scenery beyond.

Every joint, connection, and detail are intentional and finely tuned, each playing a specific role to serve a larger whole that engages with us on an emotional and practical level. With this essentialist mindset we’ve wanted to create a space that last, rather than succumbing to passing trends or construction shortcuts.

Inside, the emphasis on materiality is evident in every detail. The tactile sensation of walking on wooden floors evokes a connection to the natural world just beyond the windows. The use of lye-treated Douglas Fir planks from Dinesen throughout the interior, from flooring to walls and ceiling, not only brings warmth to the space but also continues the promise of the house blending seamlessly with the environment. It’s a tactile experience that leaves you feeling grounded and connected to the world outside.

In the warm embrace of the timber-clad living room, nature becomes an ever-present companion, eliminating the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The choice of traditional brick flooring pays homage to the timeless elegance of Danish residential modernism from the 50s and 60s, infusing the space with a sense of heritage. In this harmonious blend of nature-inspired elements and mid-century modern influences, the materials chosen for the living space are not merely selections; they are declarations of longevity. Each component serves a purpose beyond the immediate, contributing to a timeless atmosphere that stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of thoughtful design.

Amidst this carefully curated space, inbuilt storage solutions are integrated to ward off clutter while preserving the cherished simplicity of the home. This thoughtful approach not only maintains a clean and unobtrusive aesthetic but also permits cherished objects and beloved books to double as personal decorations.

Behind the uniformity of a bright monolith wall, featuring an embedded fireplace, a welcoming lounge nook awaits. The wall is rendered with natural dolomite plaster from St Leo, creating a tactile and smooth surface. Venture further, and the house unfolds with expansive views, seamlessly balancing openness, and privacy, culminating in a home that is both inviting and intimately personal.

Whether you’re gazing out from the comfort of the interior or stepping outside, the natural beauty that surrounds this house is a constant presence. From sunrise to sunset, the changing light and moods of nature become an integral part of everyday life.

Achieving simple yet sensuous spaces require a sincere devotion to craftsmanship and an ambition to work with high-quality materials and detailing. It’s more challenging to be selective than it is to be excessive, and it takes a great deal of skill to craft spaces and furniture that work well while hiding everything except the essentials.

The architecture of the home gracefully unfolds from the sunken living room, providing a framed view of the minimalist kitchen, accentuated by a silver travertine island. The deliberate use of Douglas wood, natural bricks, and travertine throughout the home, coupled with carefully framed views of the surrounding natural environment, creates a seamless connection, harmonizing the home with its natural surroundings.

A light tone-in-tone material palette creates an airy, open feel that bathes the interior in a soft, diffused light. This way of amplifying natural light and thus highlighting the transitions of day in a subtle manner has been a key design driver in the project.
Working with wood in architecture and design in this way, we enrich the surroundings and enhance the quality of life in a simple way. Wooden architecture creates understated expressions of timeless beauty that will appeal to us generation after generation. We find it that the traces of life in wood are a humble reminder of our own impermanence. Therefore, its inherent sense of harmony is something to celebrate and be guided by in architecture and design

At the core of the design concept lies a commitment to genuine materiality that engages the senses. All surfaces and textures are thoughtfully selected to create a space that not only captivates the eyes but also resonates with the sense of touch. This intentional approach transforms the integration of elements into an immersive sensory experience – it goes beyond mere aesthetics.

Despite being distinct spaces, the two bathrooms seamlessly uphold a harmonious aesthetic, adding to the overall cohesion of the residence. Thoughtfully placed framed views provide captivating glimpses of the lush outdoors, allowing residents to savour the serene and natural backdrop while attending to their daily rituals. This intentional design, extending throughout the entire home, skilfully blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, cultivating a profound sense of tranquillity and equilibrium.

Enhancing this connection to nature, one bathroom boasts direct access to an outdoor shower enclosed by the same rustic yet elegant materials. Surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature, residents can revel in the rejuvenating experience of an open-sky shower, transcending the conventional confines of indoor living and creating a truly sensorial connection with the environment.

Whether it’s the vibrant hues of a sunrise or the tranquil palette of a sunset, the bathtub becomes a private observatory, inviting residents to unwind while connecting with the beauty of the world beyond. The symbiotic relationship between the built environment and the surrounding nature elevates the bathing experience, turning it into a mindful retreat that celebrates the harmony between human habitation and the natural world.

The essence of designing for well-being lies not in grandiose expressions or ostentatious features but in cultivating a harmonious environment. To achieve this, we’ve harnessed the power of natural materials and colors to construct spaces that not only look and feel good but also stand the test of time.

Situated deep in the Swedish forests, close to a tiny winter sport area, a small traditional wooden retreat sits on top of a ridge formed millions of years ago. Besides the pine forest covering the fault, the surrounding landscape is a low undulating region of heaths and ridges that rise above gently sloping sandy beaches and small beach towns.

Consisting of a main house with two floors, and a guest annex built in between the tree trunks, the secluded property can accommodate up to three families with each their own suite, as the bottom floor of the main house works as a hotel suite with its own bedroom, bathroom, minibar, and sauna just as the annex is also completely self-contained.

Now completely remodeled on the inside, while the exterior has been opened up with large windows and doors, the space feels visually integrated with the wonderful and completely secluded landscape outside.

In a modern urbanized world, constantly offering us much more than we need, it is about deciding what to leave out rather than what to put in – finding out what is essential and important is key to steering life in a direction that creates happiness and well-being.
Large windows frame different valley and forest views towards east, south and west allowing the daylight to enter the combined living, dining, and kitchen space at all times of day – making nature visible within the home simply elevates the spirit and serves as a visual connection between the indoor, the outdoors, and the natural environment.
Internal doors leading from the main living room into the bedrooms and bath- rooms are designed as high slender wooden cabinet doors to take up as little space as possible in the smaller bedrooms. Their height visually stretches the sense of space and makes the ceiling height appear more spacious.

The interior material palette is kept as simple, natural, and rustic as possible dominated by oak flooring and fittings juxtaposed with dolomite plaster walls from St. Leo and a few stone elements here and there. The inherent warmth and textural qualities in the chosen materials magnify the expression of light and space, making sure that the sparse interior won’t ever feel empty.

Creating homes is often an exercise in restraint. And while the creation of a simple, authentic, and welcoming space might seem effortless and natural once completed, the journey to simplicity and the exercise of finding essence is often rather complex and not an easy task.

Being an early modernist structure, the Waterfront House originally combined stucco details with clean lines – not daring to devote itself completely to modernism – resulting in a sort of non-style without direction. We therefore decided to take away the stucco and other redundancies in order to bring out the streamlined qualities within the structure, allowing the house to finally redeem its full minimalist potential.

The concept of the internal layout has been changed to create a core in the house. The beautiful kitchen is now the heart of the home around which everything gravitates, creating a natural flow and connection between the different functionalities on the ground floor. Serving as a sort of central axis in the space, the kitchen island is made bespoke in Grigio Belliemi stone asserting a certain solidity. The characteristic stone is moreover repeated in a brushed version by the fireplace, underlining the strong connection in the house.

In the hall, storage has been optimized, while clutter is minimized. Creating a calm and tactile atmosphere, the floors has been covered with large dark stone tiles, creating a cave-like sensation.

Classical herringbone parquet in oak adds a certain grandiosity to the otherwise minimalist home.

The living room has been divided into different zones with different purposes for the domestic life that is unfolding within the space; the centered sofa arrangement has room for guests and has a cosy view of the fireplace, while the built-in sofa that stretches in the length of the room invites to snuggle up by yourself and read a book or look out over the sea.

With a balanced material palette, the interior plays on the inherent contrasts between the warmth in the applied oak wood and the cold within the elements in marble and stone. Bringing a tactility to the rooms, the walls have been covered with St. Leo paint, drawing in structures from nature.

Characteristic details from the original house have either been reconstructed or reinterpreted and turned into contemporary elements suitable for present needs. Hence, the original mullioned windows were replaced with bigger ones with modernist traits, letting in light without breaking up the great view, while the staircase is a duplicate of its predecessor, which was no longer in great shape.

In order to create a strong cohesion within the home, certain elements of the interior have been made bespoke, recognizing that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution and that these tailored compositions are lasting in that they’re not only made to serve their purpose but are also context-aware and well-integrated in the architecture, making them stand out and inflict a certain value to their surroundings.

The entire house has been completed with bespoke interior, creating a calm refuge for the family to retreat to in a world full of stimulation.

The sense of tactility and softness has been further heightened in the bedrooms, where curtains fold from one end of the room to the other – improving acoustics and creating a calm feeling of refuge.

Besides the modernist characteristics in the choice of windows, detailing on the doors, as well as in the overall geometry, we wanted to also bring our take on Soft Minimalism into play through homey details, soft elements, and tactile surfaces. This way we subtract all the unnecessary clutter, while making sure that the sparse interior won’t ever feel empty or cold.

The wooden structure of Archipelago House is harmoniously merged with the surrounding nature and draws inspiration from the local building traditions found in boathouses on the rocky shores. Set into the cliff, the house consists of four wooden volumes interlocked and connected by a terraced wooden deck that follows the sloping plot.

Furthermore, the interior follows the sloping terrain and the different spaces in the house are connected by internal steps and stairs that connect the 5 different levels of the house.
The color and material-scheme is kept in natural, muted high-end materials that reflect the nature outside.
There is not only a direct connection and transparency between inside and outside in this house, but also a more symbolic connection in terms of material and color use.

Harmoniously embodying chaos and order, nature is a constant inspiration to human kind and will survive long after our extinction. Therefore, nature should always be considered a guideline rather than a simple component.

Materials sources from nature have always been essential to human beings. They hold various properties and potential, and can caryy out a wide variety of textures
With inspiration found in both Nordic building traditions and a Japanese sensibility in aesthetics and craftsmanship, this project has aimed to achieve the best of both worlds; a combination of Scandinavian coziness with warm textures and soft furniture, while maintaining the elegance of Japanese decor.
While both styles have a focus on the utilitarian, it has been important to maintain a zen-like sense of calm in this house where the emphasis is on the life being led and the nature surrounding it.

The house is a plethora of natural materials, muted colors, clean lines, and minimal, yet well-curated, furnishings – all made from beautiful craftsmanship with a focus on quality and handmade pieces.

The main living space of the house is a double-high room divided in the middle by a large industrial kitchen island. On one side is a lounge area with a stunning framed view of the rocky hill with all its cracks and colorful organic mosses. On the other side a dining area faces the outdoor terrace and can be completely connected through folding doors that slide to one side.

All storage and functional elements of the kitchen are built into the wall facing the rock and creates a wooden internal facade that stretches in the full length of the space to maximize storage and reduce clutter.

The fact that human and nature are inseparable makes it all the more vital to have nature be part of our indoor environments – living surfaces, soft and calming nuances that makes us feel at ease.

The lighting collection has been designed bespoke for the Archipelago House to tell the story of the manufacturing collaboration between Karimoku and Kojima Shouten. Karimoku being the leading wooden furniture manufacturer in Japan and Kojima Shouten being a 220 year old Kyoto based lantermaker.

The shape of the beautiful pendant mimics the architecture of the summerhouse, that with its high and triangular shaped roof construction, needs light being spread not only down, but also up and to the sides. The bottom of the lamp has been covered with a single piece of Washi paper, which is cleverly held in place by a few magnets, making it easy to disassemble it, should you need to change the bulb.

Pavillion House

Elegantly set in the beautiful East Anglian landscape, on the border of a working farm in Suffolk, the Pavilion House is a real inside-out construction. The shapes and materials of the interior all carry a certain tranquillity and simplicity, while every room offers a different glimpse of the outside. There is a certain humility within the architecture, acknowledging that the big-ticket item in the setting is indeed the countryside; it doesn’t try to compete with it, but frames it instead.

The design of the Pavilion House is all about transparency; nature becomes an integral part of the interior. With a delicate and minimized steel construction, wooden window frames and a vertical cladding in local larch that corresponds with the existing structures on the site, there is a harmonious meeting between old and new buildings. The exterior part of the windows and fascia board of the roof in dark carbon grey metal make the steel as subtle and discrete as possible so that the wooden character of the house becomes the dominant expression.

Further increasing the presence of the house, the existing annexe has been extended to create a studio, with windows in a rhythm that responds to the fenestration of the main house and a simple L-shaped shingle border, bringing the buildings closely together. The additional space now offers a music room with a grand piano, a comfortable TV area as well as a quiet workspace. Elsewhere, a sauna has been added, with grand views over the fields.

A pavilion house of this length, surrounded by an imposing countryside, needs to stand proud and so we introduced a dark basalt podium as the foundation of the house with a shadow gap between the land and the plinth which has had the effect of seeming to raise the house from the land it stands on.
When you are visibly surrounded by nature, you compete with it at your perils, why color hasn’t been added to the walls – reinforcing the integration of interior and exterior.
Designed by Norm Architects back in 2017, but never completed, the current homeowners took on the project of bringing back the building to its original vision. “It is hard to think of this project outside of the pandemic. To have had a period of time in which it was possible to concentrate fully on something which had stalled, but had so much potential, was a real privilege,” they say of the process.

A key decision was to half the size of the existing barn, as its 5000 sqm dominated the site and was quite oversized. The new homeowners found it difficult to imagine how it could ever be used appropriately within the context of a residential, as opposed to agricultural, use. The barn that was left standing was repurposed to carry a generous number of solar panels for electricity generation with ample storage batteries inside the building, together with a rainwater system. Today, the barn has thus become a veritable eco-workhorse.

What we saw in this site was the potential to live in a way that is beautifully aligned with nature. The house provides a wonderful place to get together with our loved ones in an environment where there is time, space, light, and new possibilities.

– Homeowners

The removal of half of the barn had the effect of revealing new and wonderful views from the house as well as from the newly built studio in the annexe. Ton of concrete was moved around the site in order to create a new landscape for the house to stand in, as well as a space for a terraced seating and dining area.

Seeing through the logic of what had been started by the original owners, the renovation project allowed the new owners to move from a residential building surrounded by agricultural buildings and machinery in the middle of a farmyard to one that has become the principal form, set elegantly in its surrounding landscape.

The internal layout of the house is an open space plan with long views, divided into different functional zones by freestanding elements: only a central brick core with a wood burning stove divides the cosy living room from the large kitchen and dining area.
Wherever you find yourself in the house, there’s a seamless transition between its different functions. Wherever you choose to look out, you’ll find yourself fully immersed in the glorious surroundings; the architectural structure never spoils the stunning views.
Pavilion House cannot be thought of outside of the context of the surrounding countryside and the furnishings, as a result, follow suit. The feeling of the space is one of tranquillity, and it has therefore been important that the entirety of the interior plays a key role in tying together the contextual and spatial characteristics of the project.

Wherever you find yourself in the house, there’s a seamless transition between its different functions. Wherever you choose to look out, you’ll find yourself fully immersed in the glorious surroundings; the architectural structure never spoils the stunning views.
